Artist Residency

LGBTQI+ Project Bradog Youth Services

Bradog is a leading youth service based in the North inner city providing effective interventions and programmes for young people by building relationships and creating opportunities to foster their development, growth, and wellbeing.

This residency started in October 2021 for a 6 month period working onsite at the Bradog Youth Centre in Dublin 1. The provision of a safe space was paramount in this initiative and Bradog’s principals works towards a service that’s built on trust, positive relationships, dependability, and collaboration with young people.

My approach was responding to the areas in which the group were drawn to; mainly to creating a project which represented their curiosity relating to gender and sexuality. The exploration of flags and who and what they represent was of key interest to the group. The group explored the context of flags; the 1977 Gilbert pride flag commissioned by Harvey Milk, more modern LGBTQI+ flags, flags in a visual art context discussing artists like Greyson Perry, Judy Chicago and ‘The Flag Project’ 2020.

The completion of the tapestry culminated in a Pride party at Bradog in June 2022 where the centre raised the first LGBTQI+ flag and unveiled the work.
