Project Statement
Do we really notice what surrounds us?
Noticing our environment. It seems like something we should do instinctively, without thinking or reminding ourselves. It takes time and effort. A slowing down can provide small or significant experiences. When we begin to observe our surroundings we can assess our present moment and reflect on it’s delicacy. ‘Surrounds’ is an attempt to record the simple beauty of what we can see when we consider our environment closely.
The technique that I’ve used to make these impressions is called mono-printing which creates one original print only. The print can’t be replicated: it’s a one-off. Passing.
All of the flora collected and used here comes from the wider surrounds of where I live - some of which might even be classified as weeds. The different leaves and stems are placed directly on a plate with oil paint, and rubbed or rolled to record their texture and outline. Some of the prints have parts collaged into them; some are from multiple impressions of the same page with different elements added each time.
After viewing these detailed impressions from my own surrounds; my intention is for the audience to apply the same close consideration to their environment throughout the rest of the day. To enjoy the slowing down.
