Project Statement
Inspired by curator Hans Ulrich Obrist’s first exhibition which utilized his kitchen as an exhibition space, ‘Contained’ follows in the tradition of questioning the space and scale in which an artist can present their work.
With a layering of re-purposing, the exhibition utilizes a non-traditional environment of a re-purposed container, as a reinvented gallery space. Scale plays a key role in gallery spaces, where historically audiences have been presented art works within the contemporary ‘white cube’ environment. While the work here is constricted or confined to a 7 by 7 foot space, access to the work is egalitarian or unrestricted in this venue; moving away from the white cube and promoting openness.
The work in this exhibition reflects the notion of scale with the large, loose free formed colour backdrop in each painting, contrasted with the tight, small scaled working of pattern, resulting in richly layered and textured work. Spacing and repetition of these patterns form imagined land and seascapes.
